This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 13th July.
LATEST NEWS ON MORSE TEST CENTRES.
---------------------------------
As this news was being prepared last Wednesday, the following
centres had been notified to RSGB HQ. The county will be given first
followed by the dates on which tests are available in that county,
up until the end of August. Prospective candidates should contact
RSGB for an application form. We must stress that applications will
be accepted only if sent on the official form. Places are allocated
on a first - come first - served basis only.
So here are the details, county first, and then the dates:-
Essex - 28th, 30th July and 1st, 15th, 28th August.
Cornwall - 31st July, and 28th August.
Somerset - 3rd August.
Guernsey - 7th August.
Nottinghamshire - 9th August.
Derbyshire - at the Derby mobile rally on 10th August
and Chesterfield on 13th.
Dorset - at the Flight Refuelling Hamfest '86 on
10th August.
Mid-Glamorgan - 10th August.
Lincolnshire - 12th August
Avon - 13th August.
Berkshire - 13th August.
Northamptonshire - 14th, 20th August.
South Yorkshire - 15th August.
Gwynedd - 16th August.
Merseyside - at the Red Rose rally on 17th August.
Shropshire - 21st August.
Highland - 23rd August.
Lancashire - at the Preston rally on 24th August.
Grampian - 25th August.
Strathclyde - 25th August.
Leicestershire - 30th August.
New centres have been set up in Macclesfield (Cheshire),
Sheffield (South Yorkshire), Avonmouth (near Bristol, Avon),
Wakefield (West Yorkshire), Kettering (Northamptonshire), and the
University of Bristol (Avon). Tests are also available at the Harlow
rally on 21st September and the Leicester amateur radio show on 24th
and 25th October. The closing dates for applications is three weeks
prior to the date of the test and application forms are available
from RSGB HQ. Please mark your envelopes "Morse tests (BR)".
New centres are coming on - line every day and the RSGB is
currently offering about 900 places at Morse test centres around the
country. Although there are still some areas where centres are not
yet available, the testing of examiners is continuing well. London
area examiners were tests last weekend and it's expected that we'll
be able to start taking bookings for centres in the London area in
about 4 weeks time. Additional examiners in the north east will be
tested towards the end of July and those in the north west in mid -
August. Please don't ask for tests in these centres just yet, we'll
give details of when bookings can be taken in a few weeks time.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
The steady and slow decline in all parameters continued during
the period between 30th June and 6th July. The long run of zero
sunspot counts was broken on the 3rd and 4th July, when counts of 12
and 14 were recorded. Solar flux levels are still declining overall,
although the change is now very slow. The average for the period was
66 units. The geomagnetic A index was reasonably steady around quiet
or just unsettled; the average for the period was 8 units. There was
almost no particle input from the solar wind. The INDA index for the
period between 23rd and 29th June was quiet to just unsettled.
The monthly mean sunspot count RI for June was 0.8, with a
maximum of 7 on 1st June, and zero for all other days.
Sporadic E was very prevalent in the southern part of the UK
and it lasted for about 15 hours on 2nd July. In the north, however,
there was only about 1 hours' worth.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
The F2 critical frequencies declined during the period. The
daily highs averaged 5.4MHz but sporadic E has had considerable
influence. Blanketing levels were reported for 15 hours on 2nd July,
and 10 hours on the 3rd and some sporadic E was recorded on each day
of the period. The darkness hour lows are also declining, partly
because of the general run down to the minimum. Solar minimum is
expected at about this time next year. The decline is also related
to the mid summer seasonal changes. The average for the period was
2.8MHz.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
The F2 critical frequency declined during the period to an
average of 4.9MHz, although odd days such as 2nd July were much
better - the figure for that day was 5.8MHz. The widespread and
intense sporadic E which was recorded in the south of the UK was
absent in the north, so daylight levels were very depressed in the
north.
The darkness hour lows also fell and averaged 2.5MHz. The
seasonal changes will start to affect these levels shortly.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
The sun is still almost spotless and the very low level of
solar activity is showing almost no sign of change. Solar flux
levels are expected to continue the very slow fall of the past 6
months; the rate of decline is about 2 flux units per month. The
geomagnetic field is reasonably steady at quiet levels and this
pattern is expected to continue. Only coronal holes or
disintegrating filaments are affecting the geomagnetic field and
both these events are rare at present.
F2 critical frequencies during the day are not expected to
change very much and in the south they are expected to reach between
5.5 and 6MHz. In the north, levels between about 4.5 and 5.5MHz are
likely. The rather high level of darkness hour lows is expected to
fall slowly. Sporadic E should still be present on most days,
particularly in the south.

the Highwood sports centre, Colchester. The rally will open at 10am
